Do Fire Extinguishers Expire? The Easiest Check Before Committing

Fire extinguishers do expire, even when the cylinder never prints the word. For a typical stored-pressure home unit sold in the United States, Kidde's U.S. support page treats the extinguisher as still good if the gauge needle sits in the green/full area and the manufacture date is less than 12 years ago. First Alert's Help Center article "How long do fire extinguishers last?" tells owners to replace a non-rechargeable extinguisher after 10 years from the manufacture year, while describing a general 10-to-12-year life expectancy. NFPA 10, Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers, as applied in a Minnesota Department of Health guide that cites the 2010 edition, requires nonrechargeable extinguishers to be removed from service 12 years from the date of manufacture (Sec. 7.3.1.2.1.3). Rechargeable dry-chemical units can remain in service after that mark if they pass a monthly visual inspection, an annual maintenance check, a six-year internal examination, and a hydrostatic test at 12 years. The easiest check before committing is the pressure-gauge needle and the manufacture date.

A television on a shop wall is switched into a picture mode built for fluorescent light. A fire extinguisher is sold the same way. The green arc on the gauge is the picture that closed the sale.

Where is the manufacture date on a fire extinguisher?

The clock starts at manufacture, not at a printed "expires on" line. Kidde's support article on finding the date, serial, and model number says that date can be a two-digit or four-digit number stamped into the bottom of the cylinder, or a number printed on the cylinder itself. Kidde's refill page repeats the split: two digits on the bottom, or four digits stamped into the cylinder.

When the date is a printed string, Kidde walks through a worked example. On a code written as `1205322062`, Kidde reads `1205` as the time on a 24-hour clock, `322` as the day of the year (November 18), `06` as the year, and `2` as the assembly line.

First Alert puts the year in a different spot. The company's Help Center article on finding the model, serial, and manufacture date says the four-digit manufacturing year sits in a small box near the Underwriters Laboratories logo, usually to the left of it.

That stamp is the clock the 10-year and 12-year figures run from. The warranty on the carton is a separate field. Kidde's FA110 recreational spec sheet, for the common 2.5 lb disposable ABC unit, lists a 6-year limited warranty. Kidde's U.S. support page still uses a 12-year manufacture-date window if the gauge is green. First Alert's HOME2PRO, on the company's product page, carries a 12-year limited warranty.

Do disposable and rechargeable fire extinguishers expire the same way?

They do not. Search overviews that say "10 to 12 years" mix First Alert's 10-year instruction for disposable units, Kidde's 12-year U.S. support instruction, and NFPA 10's 12-year removal rule for nonrechargeable extinguishers. Those are three clocks, not one average.

Kidde disagrees with itself across the Atlantic. The U.S. refill page uses a 12-year cutoff with a green gauge; the U.K. FAQ uses the same green-gauge test and a 10-year cutoff. First Alert's Help Center is closer to the U.K. Kidde figure. California Code of Regulations Title 19, section 575.1(b), matches NFPA 10's 12-year removal and adds that non-rechargeable units shall not be recharged or hydrostatically tested; they are discharged and removed.

Rechargeable dry-chemical extinguishers follow a maintenance path instead of a hard stop at that birthday. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157 binds employers; homeowners sit outside that duty, and the same cylinders sit in both settings. Paragraph (e)(3) requires an annual maintenance check. Paragraph (e)(4) requires stored-pressure dry-chemical extinguishers that need a 12-year hydrostatic test to be emptied and maintained every 6 years, and it exempts non-refillable disposable containers from that teardown. OSHA Table L-1 sets hydrostatic testing at 12 years for stored-pressure dry chemical with mild steel, brazed brass, or aluminum shells, and at 5 years for stored-pressure water, carbon dioxide, and stainless-steel dry chemical, among other types. NFPA 10, in the Minnesota guide, matches that split and treats nonrechargeable dry-chemical units as the hydrostatic exception: they leave service 12 years from manufacture.

After any discharge, the families part again. First Alert's fire-extinguisher FAQ says a non-rechargeable unit should be replaced after any discharge, even a small amount. A rechargeable unit with the gauge in the red goes in for service and recharge.

Wayne Guyette, then owner of Guyette Fire Protection in Keene, New Hampshire, and a former Spofford fire chief with 25 years as a firefighter, told NYT Wirecutter that a disposable unit used even briefly has to be thrown away, while a rechargeable unit needs a refill. His habit: have something, and check it every once in a while.

What does a fire extinguisher pressure gauge in the red zone mean?

On a stored-pressure unit, the gauge is the live reading. NFPA 10, as summarized in the Minnesota Department of Health guide, treats a pressure-gauge reading in the proper range as one item in the monthly inspection. A needle in the green band is that range. A needle in the red band is not.

Kidde's U.S. support page pairs the green/full area with the manufacture date as the two conditions for calling the unit still good. First Alert's FAQ says that for a rechargeable extinguisher, an arrow in the green means fully pressurized, and an arrow in the red means it should go in for service and recharge.

The next step depends on the label. NFPA 10 Sec. 7.2.3.1, in the Minnesota guide, requires full maintenance on a rechargeable extinguisher when the gauge is out of the operable range, or when fullness cannot be confirmed by weighing or lifting. Sec. 7.2.3.2 is stricter on nonrechargeable dry-chemical units: if the gauge is out of range, fullness cannot be confirmed, or a push-to-test indicator fails, the extinguisher must be removed from use, discharged, and either destroyed or returned to the manufacturer.

A green needle is not a complete test. The Minnesota guide states that a gauge in the normal range is not a 100 percent guarantee the extinguisher will perform as intended. A broken seal can mean someone used the unit and discharged too little agent to move the needle. Some disposable units use a push-to-test button instead of a gauge; NFPA's 2020 explainer "Guide to Fire Extinguisher ITM" tells inspectors to operate those indicators. If the pin does not pop back up on an unused disposable First Alert unit, the company's FAQ says the unit should be replaced.

How often should a home fire extinguisher be inspected?

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157(e)(2) says portable extinguishers in the workplace "shall be visually inspected monthly." NFPA 10, in the Minnesota Department of Health's 2010-edition citation, requires a visual inspection when the unit is first placed in service and at least monthly thereafter, at 30-day intervals. First Alert's life-expectancy article tells owners something different again: the extinguisher "should be tested weekly according to the user's manual," with a green gauge or a push-to-test pin that pops back up as the pass. Kidde's U.S. refill page does not add a weekly test; it names the green gauge and the 12-year manufacture date.

The monthly NFPA 10 inspection is the interval built into the standard most U.S. fire codes adopt for portable extinguishers. First Alert's weekly line is the manufacturer's manual talking.

The Minnesota guide lists what the monthly look is for: designated place, clear access, gauge in the proper range, fullness by weighing or lifting, intact seals, no damage or clogged nozzle, and instructions legible and facing outward. NFPA 10 Sec. 7.2.4 requires a record of the date and the initials of the person who did the check.

Annual maintenance is a different job. OSHA 1910.157(e)(3) requires an annual maintenance check. OSHA (e)(4) and NFPA 10 Sec. 7.3.1.2, as cited in Minnesota, require a six-year internal exam on stored-pressure dry-chemical units that take a 12-year hydrostatic test; disposable containers are exempt. OSHA Table L-1 and NFPA 10 Table 8.3.1 put ordinary dry-chemical cylinders on a 12-year hydrostatic interval and water, carbon dioxide, and wet-chemical cylinders on a 5-year interval. A failed shell is removed from service.

Barry Chase, then senior fire protection engineer at the National Fire Protection Association, told Wirecutter that each floor of a dwelling should have at minimum a 2-A:10-B:C extinguisher, with more units "installed to ensure a maximum 40-foot travel distance to an extinguisher from any point on the floor level." OSHA 1910.157(d)(2), written for workplaces, sets a 75-foot travel distance for Class A extinguishers. Those two figures belong to different occupancies.

How long does a fire extinguisher spray, and what does the UL rating mean?

Discharge duration is short enough that a missed aim spends a large fraction of the bottle. Kidde's FA110 recreational spec sheet, for a disposable multipurpose dry-chemical unit UL-rated 1-A:10-B:C, lists a discharge time of 8-12 seconds, a range of 6-8 feet, 2.5 lb of monoammonium phosphate, 100 psi operating pressure, and a nylon valve, handle, and lever.

Amerex's U.S. hand-portable catalog lists longer discharge on the rechargeable ABC line. The B500, UL-rated 2-A:10-B:C with 5 lb of agent, is given 14 seconds, 12-18 ft, and 195 PSIG. Joseph Keenan, then assistant fire marshal of the Burlington, Vermont, Fire Department, told Wirecutter that people who have never used an extinguisher "typically spray the agent anywhere but at the base of the fire."

The letters and numbers on the nameplate come from UL 711, the fire-test standard, alongside UL 299 for the dry-chemical hardware. First Alert's Resideo listing for the HOME2PRO states the unit is listed to both standards and carries a 2-A:10-B:C class. Kidde's FA5G-family datasheet explains the scale: an extinguisher rated 3-A is approximately three times as capable against Class A fires as one rated 1-A. Wirecutter's Doug Mahoney, citing the UL method, treats each number beside A as 1.25 gallons of water equivalent, so a 2-A rating is 2.5 gallons.

Chase's dwelling floor figure is 2-A:10-B:C. The Kidde FA110 on a lot of home-center hooks is 1-A:10-B:C. Keenan, speaking to Wirecutter about residences, put a 1-A:10-B:C in the kitchen on the egress path as a supplemental unit.

Class A is ordinary combustibles, B is flammable liquids, C is energized electrical equipment. "Dry powder" is a separate U.S. term. OSHA Table L-1 lists dry-powder extinguishers with mild steel shells on a 12-year hydrostatic interval, the Class D metal-fire agent, not the ABC household fill. British queries that say "dry powder fire extinguisher expiry date" often mean ABC dry chemical.

Can a 10-year-old fire extinguisher still be used?

A disposable unit whose manufacture stamp is 10 years old sits in the gap the overviews flatten. First Alert's Help Center would replace it. Kidde's U.S. support page would still call it good if the needle is in the green and the stamp is under 12 years. NFPA 10 and California Title 19, section 575.1(b), would still allow it at year 10 and remove it at year 12. Kidde's U.K. FAQ would already have retired it.

A rechargeable dry-chemical unit at 10 years is past the six-year internal examination OSHA 1910.157(e)(4) and NFPA 10 require, and two years short of the 12-year hydrostatic test in OSHA Table L-1. If that six-year exam was never done, the age of the cylinder is not the only overdue item. A 10-year-old unit with the needle in the red is already out of service, at any age. So is a unit that has been discharged, even briefly, if the label says nonrechargeable.

How to check a fire extinguisher before keeping or replacing it

  1. Find the manufacture date. On a Kidde unit, look for a two-digit or four-digit stamp on the bottom or in the cylinder, or a printed production string. On a First Alert unit, look for the four-digit year in the small box by the UL logo.
  2. Read the pressure gauge. Green is the operable range. Red on a disposable unit is a removal; red on a rechargeable unit is a service call. If the unit uses a push-to-test pin, the pin has to pop back up.
  3. Read the label for rechargeable versus disposable wording. "Nonrechargeable" or "Discharge and Dispose of After Any Use" is the disposable family.
  4. Match the age to the clock that applies. First Alert's disposable instruction is 10 years from manufacture; Kidde's U.S. support page and NFPA 10's nonrechargeable removal rule are 12 years. A rechargeable dry-chemical unit is then checked against the annual tag, the six-year internal exam, and the 12-year hydrostatic date.
  5. If the unit is rechargeable and any of those service dates is due, take it to a fire-equipment shop. If it is disposable and past the applicable window, or in the red, or already discharged, it is a replacement, not a refill.
